Nov 25th 2010

We have been up to the cabin twice since August and just really went to enjoy the place. On this visit Patty completely emptied the cabin and worked on re-arranging the inside.

While Patty was working inside I worked on the porch some more and the porch railing:

August 2nd 2010

Well bug season is over, and we have been up to the property twice since my last post. Both times just to relax and enjoy the place (as long as the bugs let us stay lol). We also have the property next to ours for sale $59000.00 if your interested, which is WAYYYYYYYYYYY more than we paid.
I am please to report that Patty stayed her first night alone up there since my last post. She took the dogs and went up and enjoyed the land, some fishing and mostly sleeping I think lol... Proud of her that she did it!!!!

On to the cabin... Yesterday Patty and I went up to the property for the afternoon really just to relax and look at the survey stakes for the lot next to us. Its nice to know where one of our boundaries are, and free as well!!! Cant beat that... This got me in cabin mode, no bugs, nice breeze... Ok right back to the cabin, so I returned today with hopes of getting the porch roof on...

Here is what will be my posts. They are cedar recovered from that barn tear down we went to in the spring. I cut them to notch the 2x4 in, and cut them to length:

I then started to add the rafters, which are old cedar 2x4's reclaimed from a womans house who was moving. I cut these at home with a 6 degree cut on either end and 90' long:

I then added some branches (which are from trees we fell in clearing the lot) as supports and braces. In some cases these may change, but you get the idea:

I almost ran into this guy, knew Patty would like to see it so here are some stots:

I thought that I had sheets of plywood up there, but I just had some pieces. So I took the time to put them up for the time being until I can get full sheets up there:

It was a great day all and all, the porch roof is nearly done and I managed to tire 2 dogs and myself lol... Hope to get back up there this weekend and finish the porch and maybe another deck??? or a window??? or finish some siding??? oh the list is endless.... and I love it!!!

July 4th 2010

Well its been a while since I last posted on here, but hey thats bug season lol... We have been quite busy around the house in our "off" season and did get a lot done here. New decks, shutters install, workshop roof reshingled, painting, garage sales and oh yeah raising all the kids lol... Patty and I actually started cleaning up the workshop for the garage sale and had accumliated quite a pile of things fo rthe cabin, so we thought we would take a load up...

Here is the truck as we left:

  • Futon
  • Cabinets
  • Screen door
  •  Dolly

We got up the cabin and found that the bugs were quite bad actually, so it was a good thing we had brought all the indoor work. We empited the cabib out and started to hang the cabinets:

We also got the futon in and Patty is making sure that it didn't get away lol:

We also got the screen door hung:

Here are the two cabinet together:

All and all I think they turned out great, even greater since I didnt measure any of it lol...

Thats all for now...

April 19 2010

Well Patty is off at some training in the big smoke, I decided that I would go up to the cabin after work and deliver some of the wood we got over the weekend. I also planned on completing the deck, and getting some measurements for the rest of the porch. All went really well, other than I forgot the camera in the truck, so all of the pictures I have are taken as I was leaving... Good news is the deck is done, bad news is that the bugs are starting there apperance for the season, so I am not sure how many more evenings I will be able to spend up there, but hey Rome wasn't built in a day....

Free firewood from a local truss and lumber yard, could it get any better than this!!!!

The insulation that you see in the truck is being returned to home depot tomorrow... The wood stove provides us with more than enough heat lol... It was nice to get up there and get that out of the main level, looks really big now... Cabinets next time???? ;)

April 18th 2010

Time to update the WWW once again on our progress. On Sunday we had the opportunity to go and get some wood from a 100 year old barn that was being taken down. It was like a recycler/reusers dream come true, all that wood and so little place to carry it lol... I didnt get any pictures of the place, but here here some of the "truckload" we brought back. I would like to thank Scott from Cobourg for inviting us to his "dream"...

The posts that you see will be for the supports for the porch roof. In this load of wood we also captured 5 old rafters from the barn, they will be used on the porch as well. The shorter logs that you see will be made into a railing, either for the porch or for the loft... depends if Patty or I get to them first lol...

April 10th and 11th

Well it was a fantasic weekend, so we packed up and went to the cabin to get some more work done on the loft. I had some great helpers for this trip.... Brett, Dallas and Faith came along to help me as well as pick out their locations for their own cabins!!! We managed to get the loft floor completed as well as move the bed up to the loft (thanks Bud!)... The inside is so much bigger with out the bed on the main level. Really starting to come along now!

All three kids did pick out locations for their cabins... Brett and I started on his, here is the floor started:

I went alone and was determined to start the porch... I had to be creative around the rock by the front door, but in gerneral I am really happy with the progress and the look of the porch so far. I had to use lumber I had available, which in most cases was 2x4's (would have liked 2x6's but beggers cant be choosers) :) The porch floor will support the roof above, which I will be using cut down trees from the lot clearing as my posts. Should look great when I am done (fingers crossed).

I the end I was short 3 boards (which I have at home) and need to pick up some joist hangers for the 2x4's just to make it that much more secure. Its coming along!!!! :)

April 2nd 2010

Wow what a beautiful day it was, I even broke out the work shorts for the trip and boy was I glad that I did. We loaded up the truck and set off to the property around 11. I had hopes of getting the front of the cabin finished and also getting the loft put togeher on this fine day. Brett and his friend Joey came along to help and do some shooting, Brett helped do the loft and the two of them hung Scooby (finally found a good use for a over 6 foot stuffed animal that I won at Canada's Wonderlad a few years ago) in a tree for target practice. Over all I was very happy with the condition of the "driveway" to the cabin. I think on the next visit I will get the Jeep running again so getting things back to the cabin will be a lot easier. I also got the chimney siliconed and sealed, which was long over due.
Here are some pictures of the day:

Scooby all loaded up for the journey lol:

Patty and I are extremely happy with the way that the front has turned out. Next trip I hope to get the other window in, finish the floor in the loft and side another side of the cabin... Looking homey now!!!!
